5am: Someone Tell Me This Is A Faze

Apparently I didn't get the memo about how much fun it is to be up for hours in the dead of night... but Nathaniel did!

Gone are the days when my little boy would wake, eat, have a diaper change, and then slip back into a peaceful sleep. Now we fight tooth and nail to get him to go back to sleep. Here's a brief glimpse of last night's festivities: Nathaniel woke hungry. He was fed and changed and then fed again since he was still hungry. Mama put him in his bassinet. Two minutes later, he was fussing so mama held him and then put him back down. He fussed again. Mama caved and decided he could spend the rest of the night in bed with her and daddy. Nathaniel seemed happy and then decided to fuss once the lights were turned off.

Daddy suggested that he might be hungry (again) so Nathaniel was fed for a third time. He pooped during this feeding and had a blowout which dirtied his pajamas. (Mama wanted to have a good cry at this point.) By the time he was done eating and was wearing a new diaper and clean pajamas, we had all been up for two hours.

At last, Nathaniel laid down in his bassinet and fell asleep... for an hour. At which point he woke up and wanted to snuggle in mama and daddy's bed.

Someone, please tell me that this is just a faze that my little boy is going through... because being awake at 5am is really overrated!

  1. This, too, shall pass. Wee ones go through all kinds of phases, until they settle in. Nathaniel will get it sorted out. Just hang on.

  2. How old is Nathaniel again? It sounds like a growth spurt to me...

  3. We are in that phase, too! I think I got a total of 3 hours of sleep, all night long! It was horrible! Last night I finally put him in our bed after trying to get him back to sleep for an hour! He slept much better after that, thank goodness! Good luck!

  4. We often found ourselves vacuuming or playing music in the middle of the night for a few hours since babies don't know night and day for awhile--there is nothing you can do, they figure it out for themselves. Good luck! This is the phase that I found the most frustrating because neither mom or dad got much sleep!

  5. Meredith, Nathaniel is 6 weeks. And I hope that this is just a growth spurt! Tonight, we're going to try putting the seahorse toy near his bassinet if he can't sleep. Hopefully the music/noise will help!
