Surprise Me

There are times in life when it is clear that there is something at work which is bigger than yourself. There are also unexpected encounters that affect not only our lives, but the lives of the people who cross our paths. It is the unexpected encounters that God often uses to impact change; change in our lives, in the lives of family, friends, or complete strangers.

These encounters often occur in the places we least expect them, in places where we wouldn't think to look for God. If we were only to step back and separate ourselves from our daily lives for just a brief moment, we may open our eyes to the surprises of God.

This last weekend, Jonathan and I tried out a new church. The message was given by a guest speaker who encouraged the church to pray and look for the surprises of God. The message was based upon the idea that God loves to surprise His people- not necessarily with a new car or a million dollars, but through using us and working through our lives.

I recently had one such unexpected encounter. I learned that God will use His people wherever we choose to spend our time, be that at the office, at the store, or on the internet. These surprising moments often seem inconsequential to us until we look back at them as moments past, with new perspective.

This morning I am left with a challenge to myself as well as anyone who may take the time to read this: wherever you go, however you spend your time today, will you allow yourself to be surprised by God?
